Home Maintenance Tips for Fall and Winter

The cold season has already arrived in many parts of the country. Here in Savannah, Georgia the temps are still warm, our annual cold snap could come any day now

It’s important to prepare your home for the colder weather coming. Taking a little bit of time to winterize your home can save you a lot of time, and money, later on. Check out these tips for preparing your home for the fall and winter.

  1. Check window and door weather stripping for damage.

  2. The leaves will continue to fall through December, but now is a good time to clean your gutters.

  3. It’s much cooler to be up in your attic, check your roof for damage or leaks.

  4. Check attic insulation for pest damage.

  5. Have your furnace serviced. A good time to check on this is the first cold snap we get. It may only be a day or two before it warms up, but knowing if you need maintenance is better now than when we have weeks of cold weather!

  6. Plan on having a fire this winter? Check your chimney for obstructions and make sure your damper is working.

  7. Aerate and fertilize your lawn.

  8. Change smoke detector batteries.

  9. Clean and store outdoor furniture.

  10. Fresh’n up for winter. Have landscaping pruned and put fresh mulch down.

  11. How hardy are your plants? If you haven’t swapped out your planters for winter blooms like snapdragon and violas, bring potted plants inside.

  12. Change your ceiling fan direction. Check out this post for more info.

  13. Have a pool? Check the condition of your pool cover.

  14. Fall and Winter are great times to consider having your house painted. Our mild temps and generally lower humidity make for better painting conditions.
